Gig review: Bulldog Bash 2000
Okay. Hell has frozen over and the Angel's are definately singing... I just got back from the Bulldog Bash - I'm tired and sunburnt. I'm also extremely mellow and find myself staring blankly with a grin on my face! It
may be because of the smokes, or it coud be because I keep having flashbacks of the Fun Lovin' Criminals on stage Saturday night. I to think it's the latter, but it's most likely both!If you've never had the immense pleasure of seeing FLC do their stuff on stage you really won't understand my enthusiasm. If, however, like me, you're an avid fan - then no doubt you were there and you *exactly* what I'm saying.
FLC apparently agreed to perform at this years Bulldog Bash - organized by the English chapter of the Hells Angels - after a 'situation' was diffused by a member of the New York chapter
and the band became friends with them. So, much to my delight they're playing. And yes, I'm going. The opening track, 'The Fun Lovin' Criminal' (of course) went
down a treat. Although the audience were packed in, it did seem to take a few tracks for the whole front section to get *really* appreciative - and believe me, they did. As classics were
reeled out one after the other, 'Up on the Hill', 'Southside', and 'Scooby Snacks' (to name just a few) the audience just wouldn't stop clapping and cheering - leading to a slightly bashful
Huey breaking between tracks longer than usual waiting for the cheering to die down in order so the next track could be heard. Three new songs were also played - The first one (working
title 'Dickholder'!) was a laid back track; The second was introduced as 'Streets are watching' after Huey 'forgot' the title and Fast had to r emind him and is aka 'Everything under the stars' from the Titan AE soundtrack'. A real thumping tune; The third was a punky number titled 'Where the bums go'. We were also
given the usual Huey joke whilst he got his breath back ("Two men chatting in a bar, one said to the other do you like women with really big saggy..." - Oh, I wont spoil it for you -
maybe Huey will tell it to again)! We also got an explanation for 'All For Self' (something about politicians) and some hints as to what 'Big Night Out' is really about (I got the
impression it's something to do with dealing drugs to supermodels? (Though everyone else will still swear D is for Dick). There were
some sound problems near the start of the set (either that or someone really was getting shot!) as some loud bangs and pops sounded out and Huey tried his best to keep going whilst looking a
little bemused. And of course, Hueys acting school. Fast has obviously been working on getting some of the underlying beats onto track. A bad thing? Not really, it allowed them to be a little
more adventurous and ad lib in the notes they were playing - song's I'd heard live before were suddenly coming out as unique to that show.
The time flew past and suddenly they were off stage. A short encore later and it was all over. I'd managed to a) loose the J I'd rolled in preperation to Smoke 'Em; b) loose my gear whilst
rolling said J. and c) ran out of f**in batteries in my camera. Even so, I've also been a) offered a something white and powdery by some bloke (I respectfully declined!), b) borrowed a chair in
order to get a better view for a short while, and c) seen the best live act of the year. But I'm suddenly very sad. Time to go and leave the lads to the Miss Wet T-Shirt comp!!!!
